Using the step grid

How do I write a beat by hand?

Rows are pads, columns are steps

Every pad with a sound gets its own row, and each bar is divided into sixteen steps. Tap a cell to place that pad on that step. Tap it again to remove it.

Empty pads have no row, so the grid grows as your kit does.

One bar at a time

A pattern can be up to eight bars, but the grid shows one bar at a time. The numbered tabs above the grid switch between bars.

While the sequencer is playing, the grid follows the bar that is playing. You can tap a bar tab to edit a different bar while the loop continues.

Tapped steps and recorded hits

Steps you tap and hits you Record live play together as one pattern. Play a part live to get the feel, then fix a stray hit by tapping its cell. Or program an exact skeleton and play the loose parts on top.

Recorded hits appear in the grid on the step they land closest to. Tapping an occupied cell removes the tapped step and any recorded hit on it.

Working on a bar

Each bar has its own actions:

  • dup copies the current bar onto the next one, or adds it as a new bar. Write one bar, duplicate it three times, then change the fourth.
  • hold loops the current bar on its own while you edit it.
  • erase removes every hit in the bar and keeps the bar.
  • del removes the bar, so the pattern gets shorter.

Clear empties every bar. del and Clear cannot be undone, so both ask for confirmation first.

Muting a pad

Tap a row’s label to mute that pad. Muted pads are skipped during playback, so you can hear how the pattern sounds without them. Tap the label again to unmute.
